MANILA, PHILIPPINES—Typhoon Fengshen swept through central and southern Philippines June 21-22, triggering flooding, landslides and power outages and sending thousands from their homes. “All the subproject coordinators are busy assessing the needs of affected families,” said Marivic Ihap, chairman of the executive coordinating committee for CFCA’s Quezon project, located near Manila. CFCA-Kansas is also awaiting news from project coordinators in the Manila, Antipolo, Legazpi and Zamboanga projects. The western Visayas region and the central island province of Iloilo were worst hit. Fengshen headed north through the island of Luzon and pounded Manila with heavy rains and sustained winds of 74 miles per hour. The southern island of Mindanao also suffered flooding caused by a separate monsoon that was given strength from Fengshen. CFCA serves 46,714 sponsored members in the Philippines: about 42,700 in and around Manila and on the island of Luzon, and more than 4,000 in Zamboanga on Mindanao. No sponsored members live in Visayas or Iloilo. Sponsors wishing to help may donate to CFCA’s Disaster Assistance Fund. One hundred percent of donations to this fund are sent to CFCA projects to help individuals and families affected by disasters. Funds donated are used where they are most needed, and CFCA retains discretion as to the use of the funds. In addition to emergency relief, contributions may be used for long-term assistance.
