Hurricane floods CFCA communities in Mexico

MERIDA, Mexico — Project workers are distributing aid to sponsored members and their families in four CFCA-Merida communities flooded by Hurricane Karl.
Hurricane Karl made landfall Sept. 17 near Veracruz, rapidly diminishing in intensity but still inflicting heavy damage.
The storm affected sponsored members and their families in Nacajuca, in the Tabasco state of Mexico. They have listed food supplies as their highest priority.
Although access to the area is difficult, the project staff has begun distributing food supplies to sponsored members in the communities most affected.
The remaining communities will be served on Sept. 27 and 28, said Javier Damas Rojas, coordinator of the CFCA office in Nacajuca.
Gaspar Góngora, Merida project coordinator, will convert the CFCA office in Nacajuca into an emergency shelter for sponsored members and their families, which he expects could accommodate 25-30 people.
The Merida project, which serves more than 6,400 children, youth and aging members, has funds set aside for disaster assistance.
