Flooding affects school, crops in Guatemala

SAN LUCAS TOLIMAN, Guatemala — CFCA communities in the south of Guatemala have been affected by severe flooding caused by three days of heavy rains.
School has been closed since Wednesday in the communities of Cuyotenango (CU), Mazatenango Suchitepequez (MS), San Antonio Retalhuleu (SAR) and Santo Domingo Suchitepequez (SC), said Luis CoCón, of the Guatemala communications center in San Lucas Toliman. CFCA serves about 5,000 sponsored members in these areas.
CoCón said the flooding has hampered CFCA's benefit distribution in these areas and destroyed some crops. The town of Mazatenango was without drinking water because the water treatment tanks clogged with mud.
A sponsored elderly woman took refuge in the CFCA’s Mazatenango office.
“She felt safer at the office because it was sturdier than her home,” CoCón said.
